Well, Eli has returned to her life in Australia... which has been a bit hectic and a big transition (not to mention battling a bad cold at the same time). Eli has only two more days left in Italy. She has spent these last seven months exploring Italy's cities, eating the most devine Italian meals, learning more about her Italian man and discovering more about herself. When Eli arrived in Italy, she knew absolutley no Italian, yet now she can understand everything that people say and is even able to speak some basic Italian! In commiseration of Eli's departure from Italy, she thought she would share some vintage Italian travel-related ephemera, from a few of the cities that she explored with her beautiful Italian man. While on the hunt for a birthday present for her little brother, Eli just couldn't go past a Moleskine. The simple black cover, the ribbon bookmark, the cream coloured pages with rounded corners make this little notebook so elegant. It just makes you want to draw beautiful drawings and write beautiful words in its pages. Hopefully Eli's brother will like it!

Parque Guell

Eli and her man are off to Barcelona! We are leaving early tomorrow morning and are staying two nights in this hostel. Eli is just so incredibly exicted about this little trip - she has never been to Spain before, and has been told that it is just packed full of culture! Excitement!

We found the cutest little internet page, which determines which type you are (via Frankie). Eli did the questionaire and was found to be Archer Hairline. She loves it!

Eli is becoming really fond of her little camera collection. She loves to put them all together on her bookshelf - they look so lovely together. She also loves picking a camera to take out for the day, to see what wonderful things she might snap. Eli decided to put together a little collage of her camera collection, accompanied by a little personal history of each. Enjoy!

1. Kodak Brownie (1952 - 1967) : This was Eli's first camera of her collection, and quite possibly the most cute and aesthetic. Eli's mum passed it down her, which makes it really special. The black plastic body and rope cord are part of this Brownie's charm.

2. Polaroid EE33 (1976 - 1977) : This is Eli's favourite polaroid. She picked up this boxey brown camera for only 5 euros at a market in Milan.

3. Diana Mini (original Dianas 1960s - diana mini 2010) : This is the analog film camera that Eli uses the most, and has had the most fun and rewarding photographs. It travels everywhere, everyday with Eli. Bought on a whim in Milan.

4. ISO Rapid I (1965) : This is Eli's second favourite looking camera. It's just so square and its black riveted body is quite classy. Eli bought this cutie for 5 euros at the same market in Milan.

5. Polaroid Impulse (1988) : Eli's first polaroid! It just looks so eighties - especially with the red stripe. Eli bought this polaroid at a thrift store for 15 euros.

6. Polaroid Colorpack 80 (1971 - 1976) : This polaroid preceedes the EE33, which is why they look quite similar. This polaroid was generously passed onto to Eli as a gift from her boyfriend's father. It was his camera during his youth.

Each camera has a story to tell, and
each camera is special to Eli, in its own way.

Nada Surf has been one of Eli's favourite bands for a long time. Her favourite song would have to be If You Leave. It's such a sad song...and it has helped Eli through those hard times when someone close to her has left.

Eli is following her own good advice (unlike Alice, for the literary reader) and is getting more involved in the blogging community this month...by participating! As well as signing up for Rhianne's Photo Swap, Eli is also going to participate in The Envelope Project held by Pip from Meet Me at Mikes.

To participate, just send Pip a decorated envelope for her to display in her window, with something little inside. Everyone's little something will then be photographed and put up on flickr. Eli and Toggle are just a little bit excited about Photo Swap 2010, hosted by Rhianne from For the Easily Distracted. Rhianne held a photo swap last year with great success and is doing it all again this year!

All you have to do to get involved is take a bunch of photos on any film camera and send your film to someone else to get developed! You will also be send a film from someone else to develop; how fun, developing someone else's photos!

the sad bears

Eli has recently been so inspired by her trips to the zoo and to various carnivals, that she just feels the need to draw some circus animals. When she visited the zoo the other week, she absolutley fell in love with the bears. They were so playful and wise at the same time. It broke her heart though, when she saw one of the bears in captivity repeatedly walking in a circle in the corner of the enclosure. The bear's footprints consistently followed the same pattern that there were large holes in the ground where each foot went. It made Eli realise that there is a dark and sad side to the places where humans seek enjoyment - the bears are sad. This set of circus bear drawings Eli is doing is going to be called 'The Sad Bears'.

Eli and her man took a little day-trip up to Lecco. We were surrounded by beautiful mountains, the lake, boats and swans. We sat in the sun at an outdoor cafe and played Italian card games while drinking affogatos. A perfect day. Eli took some photos with her diana mini.

When Eli was a little girl she owned a red View Master. She loved flicking through the 3D images of her favourite Disney cartoons. The first View Masters were created in the 1930s, and newer models are still available today. There have been a number of models throughout the years, each one distinctly original. Eli had Model G pictured above - so retro!

Today Eli went thrifting! She found a vintage packet of View Master Reels, which she just couldn't pass up! View Masters and View Master Reels might just be Eli's next big thirfting obsession.

Okay, so Eli did something a little bit naughty today. She spent her emergency 30 euros on a retro flip-clock. Remember, those clocks that have the flipy-paper to tell the time? The definition for a flip clock is like the epitome of Eli; analogue in the inside and digital on the outside!

Eli has just loaded her baby with a battery and has been watching it for the past 10 minutes, getting very excited each time the minute flips. When the hour flips with the minutes, it will be...awesome. The image above isn't my clock, but another very nice one by Twemco. Image.

On Sunday afternoon Eli made her way to something called a 'Foto Mercato' in Milan. It was a lovely market dedicated entirely to analogue cameras and accessories, to be admired (and bought). Eli had a lovely (albiet short) time walking around and poking about. Here are a couple of lovely Hasselblad cameras Eli loved, too expensive to buy, so a photo had to suffice:

*drumroll*...and here are the two beautiful polaroid cameras that Eli purchased, for a bargain! She is absolutely in love with them. Eli chose the Polaroid Impulse and Polaroid EE33 as her new best-camera-friends. They look right at home on Eli's bed-side-table.

Eli is just bursting with ideas at the moment, with where she wants to go with Toggle! Being one of those girls who loves lists, Eli she sat down with pencil and paper tonight to construct a business plan. It includes... an Etsy shop by July 30th, fabric mushrooms, fabric bunting and most excitingly... Friends of Toggle!

Eli is just a bit nervous about this new adventure... Hopefully when she goes home to Australia she will have more time to get everything together for Eli and Toggle!

A couple of months ago Eli was on the lookout for a great birthday present for her man (no, not Toggle). She wishes she had found the Magno Wooden Radio back then! Designed by Singgih Kartono, these wooden radios are aesthetically retro while still including modern-day functions (like being able to connect your ipod). The radios come in three different designs; large, medium and small. All well, maybe next year.

Eli and Toggle simply adore this japanese masking tape set by Uguisu. Uguisu specialises in Japanese stationary and paper goods. Unfortunately, this product is out of stock at the moment, but we can still dream right?

Eli is feeling just a 'tad' bit homesick (she's in Italy). So after filing through some old photos on her computer she found two photos of her bedroom wall in Australia. The first photo is of my cute bird wall stickers - love! The second photo is of my favourite post cards I picked up in London when I was there in '09. And yes, my bedroom wall is painted yellow - such a happy colour. What's on your bedroom wall?

Eli and Toggle have been making some Flag Banners to decorate your rooms! The banners were sewn by Eli using colourful Italian fabric. Below is our little-girl-banner featuring pink, green and cream fabric. Hopefully soon we'll be designing a litte-boy-banner in red, blue and cream! And those of you who are interested in purchasing...Eli and Toggle will be setting up an esty shop in the next few months.

Eli and Toggle have some exciting news: We have just bought a typewriter! It's a beautiful vintage Olivetti Lettera 32 and we found (at a very reasonable price) at a vintage market-stall in Milan. So this post is going to be dedicated to all-things typewriter!

Eli's been typing all day long and enjoying the pushy-button sounds and ringy-bell sounds of the old machine. Seeing as Eli's typewriter is Italian-made, the keyboard is a little different. The 'W' and 'Z' keys have swaped places, along with the 'M' and the 'comma' keys. This is a picture of an Olivetti Lettera 32.

While reading up on the Olivetti brand, we came across some beautiful retro Olivetti advertisements, designed by Giovanni Pintori. Some beautiful artworks, if you want to invest in them. This is one of Eli's favourites:

Unfortunately, Eli's lovely typewriter didn't come with an instruction manual. It took her a couple of hours to work out how to use the 32 machine (with some help from the 22 manual found on flicker). To all typewriter newbies: there is something called a carriage lock - find it, and unlock it.

With this posts theme of all-things-typewriter, we'd like to show you a beautiful necklace made from an old vintage typewriter 'H' key - found on the qa create etsy shop.

When Eli opened her vintage typewriter case and pulled out her Olivetti......a crumpled piece of paper fell out! After uncrumpling it I saw that it had been typed on! At the top of the page it was written:

torino 3/7/92

Wow, that piece of paper is almost 2 decades old! And, now we know that this typewriter has been in the city of Torino, Italy. Then we went onto read the message (written in Italian)...

Ciao cucciolo, e la tua bestiolina che scrive.
E' l'unico modo di parlarti senza correre il rischio che tu ti incazzi.

The message is hilarious. I feel so special to be this old typewriters new owner, and to know that it has had a history before me. That's what I love about vintage finds.

So this is Eli's eighth developed diana film...and I feel like i'm finally finding my artistic voice when it comes to lomography...so I thought I'd share some recent photos that especially represent me! I think my style has become very suburban and domestic. I like capturing the everyday.

We've been trying out some long exposure shots using the bulb function on our Diana F+ Mini...and they've turned out great! Don't you just love carnivals...the bright lights, crying children, spinning rides, greasy food. We tried to capture that dizzy feeling you get when you're at a carnival.

Talking about Nobby's Beach, I have to mention The Cavern. It's a vintage style coffee lounge during the day and a tapas and wine bar during the night. The Cavern often features live music from talented Gold Coast artists.

i hate my skirt

Since I was a little girl, my family beach holiday has always been at Nobby's beach, the Gold Coast. Nobby's is a quieter, family sort of beach away from the riff-raff of Surfers. In the past few years Nobby's has become a bit of an artsy fashionable place to be seen and some lovely shops have popped up, including I Hate My Skirt. This clothing store has long been my favourite place to pick up some really original items from local, emerging and also known designers. I'm also happy to find out that I Hate My Skirt now has another store in Brisbane's West End. Yay! Not just holiday splurges anymore!

The papercut works of Peter Callesen are intricate and graceful. Callesen describes his work as both tragic and romantic in the sense that the figures can never escape their paper homes. The artist works mostly with white A4 paper, exploring the process of transforming the ordinary into something stunning. Below we've featured his works entitled Impenetrable Castle and The Impossible Meeting. Absolutely inspiring!

At the moment we're really enjoying the art of lomography - analogue film photography. It just feels so nice wind the film forward and get the photos developed. Lomography cameras are usually plastic and really cheap, but can produce some amazing light stained, dreamy shots. Since the camera is operated manually (aperture, shutter speed and focus) everthing is up to you! We've been experimenting with long exposure, overlapping frames and flash colour gels. These shots were taken with our Diana F+ Mini camera.
